Umbral used to say, and he was quite right about it, that one should read what the writer writes. This is another of those “non-novel” novels by Umbral with touches of irony, lyricism and truth that are rarely found in the same place. Magnificent, it tells of a time as a backdrop to the human soul that is always the same. In the end John Wayne goes silently towards a red horizon covered in horse and shadow.

What an obsession you living Spanish writers have with explaining the history of Spain to us. The history of Spain goes from 1939 to 1975 and that’s it. Another book that has made me smile because of certain common experiences, although generations apart, in the provinces. Once again, flat writing and the subject of the father, as an excuse to start fights in the air with dream enemies. All this told by a posh guy who skied in Formigal in the 70s and 80s. In the village we all know each other. What bothers me most about these writers is the lack of talent in the mixture of life, poetry and language. It seems like a neat requisition report in the department of public works of the Huesca provincial council. Don’t waste time or money. When you go to the bookstore and see it, read the inside flap with the comments from colleagues in the satrapy, I laughed out loud!

El niño by Fernando Aramburu, 2024

A great disappointment. Two hundred and seventy pages of nothingness leading to another nothingness with the language of a journalist, careful and clean. The worst of it is that it shows a shallowness, a lack of depth in understanding the human soul. It is curious how Aramburu follows that string of mediocrity, so common among Spanish writers of his generation who confuse religion, transcendence, spirituality and the unknown. Their legendary ignorance makes them solve the issue with two ready-made phrases such as “magical beliefs”. Waste of time, money and soul. Don’t bother!

This is a collection of short stories by a great writer. Short stories from the 1950s to the mid-1960s. It’s a country in transit, with that raw and crude realism also used by Cela and Umbral. Spanish language is beautiful. There isn’t much poetry, but what isn’t said, but alluded to, is as important as what is written. One of those writers who has tiptoed through our literature, perhaps due to his early death.

Los helechos arborescentes by Francisco Umbral 1976

This is a No, very sad to say no but still a no. The first book by Umbral that disappoints me. The language is still exquisite, but it’s a disjointed and half-hearted attempt at a magical story about who knows what.

Larga distancia by Martin Caparrós 1992

This author was recommended to me by a very good friend. I started it out of curiosity, but the writing quickly fell apart. The articles are a series of photos of situations in the late 1980s and early 1990s that, in a talented author, would have created something magnificent. In fact, we’re missing the scribe who can decipher the change of era when communism failed with great fanfare and the Western world lost its bearings. Martin Caparros isn’t that writer. The language is at best decent, most of the time is mediocre and the photos are superficial; they never go to the heart of things, people, or situations. I was hoping for something like what Manu Leguineche’s “The Shortest Path” or Ryszard Kapuściński, who chewed, drank and digested the world showed to him. Nothing at all. Don’t waste your time and money.

Carta a mi mujer by Francisco Umbral 2008

This is a posthumous book that Umbral finished in 1986 but never published. It’s neither a diary of intimacies or gossips nor a romantic story. It’s Umbral, and, as he himself says, you have to read what the writer writes. It is prose woven with poetry and knives. I’ll leave you with a gem: “I’ve never been interested in parties for the sake of parties, but rather in terms of the woman, the female prey… Either there’s a woman or there isn’t a woman, we’re not medieval minstrels. That’s not what it says on my ID card.” I recommend it.

Franny and Zooey by J.D.Salinger 1961

I recall reading “The catcher in the Rye” many decades ago and loving it. I do not remember why but I recall the emotional impression of a solid book. I came to this “Franny and Zooey” as a consequence of my recent readings about transcendence and the value of silence beyond the word. It is a wonderful book but you need to be ready for it, do not try it, immerse yourself in it. At the core of our civilization is that fat lady for whom we shine our shoes.

Into the silent land by Martin Laird 2006

This is both an intense and a beautiful book. Written by an Augustinian priest, this is a journey through a Catholic tradition of meditation and transcendence, with some practical guidance on how to carry it out. It’s important to note that the Beatles didn’t discover meditation on a lost mountain in India when they met a malnourished man in a loincloth. A great book that also reminds us the value of silence and how words only reach the dawn of knowledge. Umbral already hints that “transcendence is a useful derivative of the poem,” that truth is beyond words. Buy it, or better yet, read it!

From strength to Strength by Arthur C Brooks 2022

This is the second book I recommend by Arthur C. Brooks. Here he describes how the transition from a life dominated by fluid intelligence to a crystallized intelligence is fundamental to shaping and giving meaning to life as a future project. There are no formulas or magic spells, but rather a wealth of evidence coupled with human common sense. The author has a very interesting life story and truly leads by example. Buy it!

This is one of those books I learned about in literature class, as a reference to poetry in postwar Spain. But I’d never read it or thought about reading it. It’s an absolute gem. Damaso Alonso rightly believed that humankind is a constant desire for improvement, and that this is what builds life. This book peers into the recesses of the soul and its evolution over time, circumstance, and life.

Cela returned to literary prominence with this book. It’s a book permeated by drizzle, words rained by time. Myths and truths intertwined in ornate, almost baroque language. It’s a book for understanding our deepest-seated atavisms, which are now smeared with coolness, influencers, and European trophies.

What Christians believe by Bishop Robert Barron 2025

This book is a gem, written by one of the few bishops (or Catholic leaders) with the depth of thought that Aristotle, Saint Thomas Aquinas, or Saint Augustine had. It is a true treasure and supports the deep philosophical and theological roots of Catholicism. This book explains, phrase by phrase, the Nicene Creed that we recite at Mass every time we attend. The Council of Nicaea occurred 1,700 years ago (May and July of 325 AD). This book will convert many people.

This is a short adventure novel from the twilight of Baroja’s career. It was published on February 11, 1939, a couple of months before the end of the Spanish Civil War. This is a little treasure I found in a secondhand and antique bookstore in the old part of Valencia. It’s a first edition. The story is a classic Baroja tale that, in straightforward language, describes characters and settings with adventure as the backdrop for his observations. I bought it in a second-hand bookstore in Valencia, in the Ruzafa neighborhood. I was lucky enough to find the first edition from 1939!

The spirit of hope by Byung-Chul Han 2023

This by Byung, his most recent outburst of the sameness eh disparages, is the expected finale of a philosophy of dialectical historical materialism. It is striking that in “The Salvation of Beauty,” Byung says that beauty is related to fidelity, permanence, and connection. And in his miserly worldview, he says that beauty rescues the negativity, vulnerability, and imperfection that are essential to art and genuine existence. In this book, the illustrations are an example of deliberate and elaborate ugliness. This bleak look at life translates into ridiculous arguments for hope, absolutely incomprehensible. The last chapter dwell endlessly on Heidegger, who reformulated his “Dasein” into a transcendent being, Byung does not like that. He abhors beauty, the illustrations are aligned with the quality of his thinking.

Amar en Madrid by Francisco Umbral 1972

Umbral era un maestro de lo cotidiano. This short book is a collection of essays about everyday life in Madrid, from the article dedicated to sunflower seeds to the one dedicated to potential government ministers.

Quantum Physics for beginners by Carl J Pratt 2021

This is a short simple book that explains quantum physics wonderfully. I think we should all marvel at the world and learn difficult things, things that challenge our thinking. It is part of that hope, trying to understand the beauty of the world with a sense of awe at God’s creation.

The pattern seekers by Simon Baron-Cohen 2020

Este es un libro muy interesante. Baron-Cohen (cousin of the actor and comedian) is a psychologist who has studied autism for decades, but beyond that, he has developed a theory of human evolution. For him, the defining characteristic of human beings is the “if and then” mentality. We are systematizing animals who observe reality and try to understand it. This is perhaps a hasty summary; there is much more. The book is excellent—buy it!

It’s good to read a variety of books, but sometimes it’s a plain waste of time. Translations are the bastard children of ignorance, and I don’t know German, but a good translation couldn’t possibly produce such an unreadable story. If you’re going to be nihilistic and lead me to nothingness, do it with elegance. Heidegger’s Anguish is far more interesting than this story. He won the Nobel Prize of Literature in 2019; I’m almost certain I picked the wrong book!

¿Qué es metafísica? by Martin Heidegger 2003

Y Que Dios me perdone!

I must say that there are still some small gems published in Spanish. This is one of them. Heidegger has a monumental body of work, but these three essays explain his idea of metaphysics over 20 years (1929, 1943, 1949) are the crux of his philosophy and deepen or refine his 1927 work, “Being and Time, his “ Magnum Opus”. It’s curious that the last essay, describing how metaphysics is contrary to the idea of nothingness, of the absurd, dates from 1949. Camus published his essay “The Myth of Sisyphus” in 1942, where he explores the philosophy of the absurd and the idea of suicide. This is where we find ourselves today with people like Byung-Chul Han, who, when speaking of hope, criticizes Heidegger when he questions the meaning of being and how metaphysics is simultaneously ontology and theology. I recommend the book to those who like this kind of thing, the ultimate truth. But be warned, it’s hard to listen to homilies afterward!

Elegias a Duino by Rainer Maria Rilke 1923

This book is a classic of Western civilization, even though Bloom didn’t include it in his “Western Canon.” The Spanish edition by Barjau in Catedra is magnificent. I’m grateful to have such meticulous publishers among us. Read one elegy a day, and read it without any inhibitions, forget the footnotes. But you can’t read it just any day; you need to be in that special state of communion with beauty. Each elegy dissects human battles one by one, death, transcendence. And if you are one of those who “doesn’t read poetry,” do me a favor, read the first one. Listen to ” the unbroken news that takes shape out of silence.” And after reading the elegies, reread them and look at the notes if you want. The journey will have changed you already.

El tiempo reversible by Francisco Umbral 2015
